A commemoration has been held in French Polynesia marking the 100th anniversary of the first telegraphic link between Tahiti and France.

A plaque was unveiled in Mahina to mark the day in 1915 when the first cable was sent to the French minister in charge of the colonies through a station set up in Haapape.

The French Polynesian president, Edouard Fritch, says this broke the islands' isolation and ushered in an era of technological evolution.
