Fiji extends 2007 rent freeze

12:55 pm on 5 January 2016

Fiji authorities have extended a residential property and ground rent for another year to the end of December.

This means no landlord - regardless of circumstances - is allowed to increase the rent that was applicable on a property as of March the 2nd 2007.

The Fiji Commerce Commission's chief executive, Bobby Maharaj, has told FBC News that the freeze has been extended to maintain control and ensure fair treatment of tenants.

He has warned that any rent increase will be deemed illegal and penalties will be imposed.
