Wallis spared accidents

Authorities in Wallis and Futuna have hailed a largely accident-free holiday season and firefighters say there were no call-outs.

Local media say fatal accidents last year may have made car and scooter drivers more cautious.

Last October, the territory's broadcaster reported that many drivers refused to wear belts, saying they wouldn't comply as long as traditional leaders hadn't given their green light.

Wallis and Futuna is the only French territory that still allows for people to ride in the back of open pick-up trucks.
