Matangi Tonga reports Gungchang Xiao and William Hu were stopped as they tried to leave Tonga at Fua'amotu International Airport on Monday with the forged documents.

The Crown claims the passports were forged because the two accused have allegedly never been nationalised as Tongan citizens.

Mr Hu is also alleged to have a name on his Tongan passport which is different from his Chinese passport.

However a lawyer for the men says the passports were issued by the Immigration division of the Government of Tonga.

The men were released on bail and will appear at the lower court next Monday.
