Cooks escapes cyclone unscathed

12:56 pm on 20 January 2016

Palmerston Island in the Cook Islands has escaped Tropical Cyclone Victor without significant damage.

Palmerston was the island closest to the cyclone, and residents in Rarotonga and some of the islands in the northern group were clearing debris from the huge swells generated by the cyclone yesterday.

The Cook Islands Meteorological Service director, Arona Ngari, says weather should clear up by the weekend.

The Palmerston Island Administration executive officer, Arthur Neale, says the gusts and squalls had lessened, and the tides had returned to normal levels on Tuesday.

He says only two families had been moved inland due to the cyclone warning, and their homes were not flooded.
