Ireland are well placed at 232 for 5 after day one of their Intercontinental Cup cricket match against Papua New Guinea in Townsville.

PNG struck early with the ball when Norman Vanua had William Portefield caught out for 15, while Mahura Dai managed the key wicket of ex England batsman Ed Joyce.

But Paul Stirling, Nial O'Brien and Gary Wilson all passed 40 to leave the Irish in a strong position at stumps.

Norman Vanua was the pick of the Barramundis bowlers, taking 2 for 47 from 14 overs, while Loa Nou, Chad Soper and Dai each picked up a wicket.
