Samoa election candidate nomination begins

Samoa's Electoral Commissioner's office is starting to receive the registrations of nominated candidates for the 4 March general election.

The ruling Human Rights Protection Party or HRPP announced 121 candidates for the election which included 80 who would be running under the party's banner and 41 independent candidates.

This total number included the 34 HRPP MPs of the dissolved 15th Parliament who would be seeking re-election.

12 women candidates had been registered for the ruling party.

The prime minister's seat is expected to be unopposed.

Meanwhile, the opposition Tautua Samoa party leader, Palusalue Faapo II, said 45 candidates had so far been registered in the list of his party's election candidates.

He said more were expected to be registered before the official announcement on 19 February.
