Retirees caught in the middle of CNMI govt fund quarrel

Retirees in the Northern Marianas may not get 25 percent of their pension as the local government and the NMI Settlement Fund dispute the funding source of 1.2 million US dollars owed to them.

The Fund claimed that money provided by the Saipan casino law for the 25 percent pension payment of retirees was the only source of funding and since the fund is exhausted there was no more money to pay out to retirees.

However Governor Ralph Torres maintained the 25 percent could be met with money from the general fund.

He called on retirees to demand the Fund "stop playing games" and pay out the money.
