Fiji shops running low on food supplies

The Consumer Council of Fiji says there are reports of supermarket and shops running low on basic food items after Cyclone Wintson.

The Council says it conducted a snap survey around the main urban centres which showed basic food items such as potatoes, garlic, flour, oil, salt, blue peas, dhal, breakfast crackers and sugar were not on the shelves.

It says supermarkets have advised the Council that they were facing difficulties in re-stocking their shelves due to high demand from consumers.

The Council days some supermarkets have seen shoppers buying basic food items and other non-food items to make packs to donate to the cyclone-struck families.

The supermarkets have also sold some of these food items in high volume to government departments, aid agencies, civil society organisations, religious organisations and other donor groups which have taken frontline to distribute food rations to the affected families.

As expected, it says, markets are running low on fresh supply of green vegies, root crops and other vegetables.
