PNG MPs face criminal charges for misuse of funds

Two MPs have appeared before Papua New Guinea's National Court to face criminal charges.

Bogia MP John Hickey is answering to charges of official corruption, abuse of office and misappropriation.

Western Province Governor Ati Wobiro is also in court for alleged misappropriation, conspiracy to defraud and abuse of office.

The Post Courier reports that Mr Wobiro is accused of defrauding Western Province coffers of $US3.7 million.

In his case, the Governor is appearing alongside two co-accused, the Western Provincial Administrator Dr Modowa Gumoi and a Daru businessman, Norman Carl May.

Mr Hickey, who is the chairman of parliament's Public Accounts Committee, has been accused of abusing his office by applying for his own use $US330,000 of public funds.
