The Post Courier reported that the National Capital District commander, Sylvester Kalaut, said the allegations related to the use of funds earmarked for the Pacific Games held in Port Moresby last year.

Police commissioner Gari Baki last year redeployed Mr Bawa to the Highlands, but he never left and his whereabouts was apparently unknown prior to his arrest.

Mr Bawa has maintained his innocence, saying he was authorised to use the money for the operations of the NCD Command.

He has been released on bail.
