Sport: Red cards galore in Oceania Champions League

7:32 am on 12 April 2016

New Caledonia's AS Magenta went top of Group C in the Oceania Champions League on a day in which 13 goals and nine red cards were dished out in 180 minutes of football.

Christ Wajoka gave Magenta the lead five minutes into the Francophone derby before Tahiti's AS Tefana responded swiftly through Tunoa Tevaerai's 18th-minute strike.

George Bearune put the New Caledonians back in front on 26 minutes before making it 3-1 two minutes later after Tefana handled the ball in the penalty box.

Things went from bad to worse for the Tahitians just before halftime when Nicolas Vallar was booked for holding his opponent before being sent off three minutes later for challenge from behind.

Tefana did peg a goal back shortly after halftime before Magenta captain Loic Wakanumune was sent off in the 55th minute to even up the playing numbers.

George Bearune sealed the game for Magenta, completing his hat-trick from the penalty spot on 86 minutes before Tefana's woes were compounded when skipper Angelo Tchen was sent off for a second bookable offence in stoppage time.

If three red cards seemed a lot, more was in store in the later game betwen Samoa's Kiwi FC and Fiji's Nadi FA.

A brace from Mike Saofaiga and one to Paulo Scanlan gave Kiwi a 3-1 lead inside 21 minutes.

But the game turned ugly when Kiwi's Desmond Fa'aiuaso and Nadi's Waisake Tabucava, were dismissed for their part in a fracas just before halftime.

Another melee in the 81st minute saw Nadi goalkeeper Vereti Dickson and Kiwi's Lionel Taylor join them on the sidelines.

In a dramatic finish, Nadi's Anish Khem scored his second to make it 3-2 in the 87th minute before Kiwi were reduced to 8 players when Lawrie Letutusa was shown a second yellow card two minutes later.

Anish Khem completed his hat-trick six minutes into stoppage time to level the scores at 3-3.

A minute after that Nadi's Napolioni Qasevakatini was also shown his marching orders before Khem scored his fourth to complete a stunning comeback win in the 98th minute.
