American Samoa celebrations marred by weather woes

12:53 pm on 13 April 2016

The weather has interferred with Flag Day festivities in American Samoa.

Flag Day commemorates the first raising of the US flag in the Samoa group, on April 17, 1900.

As part of celebrations there are fautasi or long boat races which were scheduled for today but they have now been postponed to tomorrow because of rough seas.

Lieutenant Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga told V103 radio that the Race Committee checked out conditions and decided to call off the races .

He said the main concern was for safety of participants.

There are 13 local entries in the fautasi race and 14 boats are taking part from Manono, Samoa.

A farm and trade fair was also rained out forcing vendors to close up their stalls early.

A trough that's stationary over the Samoa group has drenched American Samoa with heavy rains since Saturday and generating high surf.

The system is expected to move southeast of American Samoa later today,

The main Flag Day programme is set for Monday, 18th April.
