Local military forces to continue Fiji rebuild

11:59 am on 20 April 2016

Fiji's military forces will continue rebuilding in Fiji after Cyclone Winston now that New Zealand and Australian forces have wound down their relief operations in Fiji.

Corporal Alfred Vusonitokalau told FBC News they are ready to implement work experience gained from their Australian and New Zealand counterparts.

He says the forces learned from each other during repair work.

FBC reports Fiji's military and the National Disaster Management Office will ensure rehabilitation work continues around the country especially on the islands of Vanuabalavu and Koro which were devastated after the category five storm two months ago.

The Fiji government ended the country's State of Natural Disaster last night and says it is now focusing on rehabilitation and recovery.

A team of 25 engineers from the New Zealand Defence Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces have been deployed to Driti village to help clear trees and rebuild homes and schools.
