One of Samoa's new MPs and Associate Minister of Labour and Tourism is calling for a ban on corporal punishment in schools to be lifted.
Tuifaasisina Risati Leleisi'uao has told Parliament the main cause of school violence was because the students knew that such discipline was no longer accepted.
Tuifaasisina said outside changes and influences did not help the discipline of Samoan children.

He said 90 percent of the country applied traditional ways of controlling children's conduct and behaviour.
Earlier this year Avele College was closed for nearly two weeks following a series of student brawls with rival school, Malua Fou College.
