The men may have missed out but Samoa's women's sevens team still have a shot at making it to Rio.

The Manusina and Cook Islands are among 16 teams competing in this weekend's Olympic repechage in Dublin.

The winning team will claim the 12th and final place in Brazil, alongside World Series champions Australia, Oceania winners Fiji and the Olympic hosts.

Samoa have had a thorough build up with matches in New Zealand, Fiji and England.

They're up against Zimbabwe, Madagascar and Russia in Pool A and coach Ramsey Tomokino said they were taking it game by game.

"We know a bit about Russia and we've got a lot of footage on Russia so we'll be doing some analysis on them," he said.

"A couple of young girls in this team didn't know Madagascar was a country. They just thought it was a cartoon - it was kind of cute really - so we obviously don't know much about them but you know with sevens you can't underestimate anyone, as you see time and time again."

The Cook Islands begin their campaign against Hong Kong and also face Argentina and Kazakhstan in Pool C.

The top eight sides advance to the quarter finals, while the top non-core team also earn a spot on next season's Women's World Series.
