PNG's PM confident he can survive motion

Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister remains confident he will survive a no confidence motion scheduled for Friday.

The Supreme Court this week ordered that Parliament must reconvene to allow a vote on the motion.

The vote was supposed to take place on June the 8th, but Parliament was adjourned that day following the police shooting of students who were trying to march on parliament in support of it.

In respecting the court's order, the Speaker of Parliament, Theo Zurenuoc, has ordered parliament to sit on Friday at 2pm, local time.

In a statement Mr O'Neill said he was seeking legal advice on the court's decision, but was confident he has the numbers to survive the motion.

He dismissed the motion as a costly attempt by the opposition to cause instability for the sake of political self-indulgence.

Friday's vote will be the last opportunity for the opposition to try and ouster Mr O'Neill, as motions are not allowed to be submitted within a year of an election.
