A court in Papua New Guinea has awarded a man almost 48,000 US dollars in damages for personal injuries after he was injured in a car crash in 2004.

Justice Nicholas Kirriwom awarded Jackson Kunis the sum which included interest, totalling $47,900 US.
The car Jackson Kunis was travelling in ran into a Toyota Land Cruiser, driven by an employee of the Correctional Service, Peter Warea.
Mr Kunis sustained fractures to his right leg and a heavy blow to his head as a result of the collision.
The Waigani National Court heard graphic details of the serious fracture, which caused bone to protrude from Mr Kunis' skin.
The state did not enter an appearance, nor did it file any defence resulting in default judgement and trial for assessment for damages.
A medical review carried out by a bone specialist in Port Moresby diagnosed Mr Kunis' as losing 80-90 percent of the efficient use of his right leg.
