Fiji military commander visits NZ

The Fiji military commander Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto is today beginning a three-day visit to New Zealand.

A New Zealand defence force statement said his programme includes meetings with the chief of the defence force Lieutenant General Tim Keating and the Secretary of Defence Helene Quilter.

The visit is the first by the head of the Fiji military since relations were normalised in 2014 after Fiji's return to democratic government.

Ties were strained because in 2006 New Zealand objected to the Fiji military carrying out its fourth coup by removing the government of Laisenia Qarase.

Lieutenant General Tim Keating said there has been a good momentum in the defence relationship of late.

Earlier this year the NZDF deployed a number of vessels, aircraft and more than 500 personnel to assist Fiji after Tropical Cyclone Winston he said.
