The French overseas minister George Pau-Langevin has resigned, citing personal reasons.

Ms Pau-Langevin, who was from Guadeloupe, had been in the position for just over two years.

Her portfolio included responsibilities for the Pacific territory of Wallis and Futuna as well as New Caledonia and French Polynesia - both of which are on the UN list of territories to be decolonised.

A government statement says she will be replaced by a state secretary, Ericka Bareigts who until March had been a member of the French National Assembly for La Reunion.

The statement also notes that the economics minister Emmanuel Macron has resigned, fuelling speculation he might stand for the presidency next year.
