A Papua New Guinea man has died from injuries he sustained in a brawl at a rugby league match last weekend.

EMTV has reported that Joe Pidik, from East New Britain province, was hit on the head with a brick thrown by angry Mt Hagen Eagles supporters at the Intercity Cup final last week.

He was taken to Port Moresby Hospital in a critical condition, but died on Friday night.

Last Saturday's brawl started when a Mt Hagen Eagles official sparked a fight with the match referee, following the Agmark Gurias' 19-12 win.

The fight then spilled into the crowd and onto surrounding streets.

The incident came almost one year after a drunk fan threw a beer can at one of the visiting referees from Queensland, following the Digicel Cup final between the Agmark Gurias and Simbu Lion, and a member of the Simbu team attacked an official.
