Mata is primarily a lock in the 15-a-side game, but can also play in the loose forwards.

After achieving his sevens goals in Rio, Mata said his goal now was to perform well for his new team.

"I am excited about signing for Edinburgh Rugby, and am looking forward to playing for the club. I am also excited about arriving in the city and meeting my new team mates," he told the Edinburgh club website.

Head Coach Alan Solomons said they were delighted to welcome him to the club.

"He is a hugely talented player who was part of the Fiji sevens team that recently won gold at the Rio Olympics. He is big, powerful and explosive and I believe he will add huge value to the team."

Former Fiji Under-20s player Solomoni Rasolea is also a recent signing at the Scottish club.
