Fiji to stop police brutality

1:07 pm on 23 September 2016

Fiji's Deputy Police Commmissioner has told the United Nations that the force will no longer tolerate police brutality in custody.

Isikeli Ligairi was speaking at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva which was also attended by Fiji's Chief Justice and the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The assurance comes as eight suspended Fiji policemen and a military officer are about to go on trial for raping a civilian who subsequently died.

It also comes amid accusations by a businessman Rajneel Singh that he was assaulted by police and left for dead last month.
