Vanuatu's Minister of Agriculture, Matai Seremaiah, is promising the people of Tanna Island that he and his staff will help them plant potatoes, carrots and onions.

It is a bid to reduce imports from Australia.

The minister said the three crops grow very well in Vanuatu and the only reason they are imported was because they are not being grown on a commercial basis, but he said this attitude needs to change.

The minister said he was targeting the farmers of Tanna because they are hardworking and the island was extremely fertile.

He said he was going to start negotiating with local importers to have them cut back their imports during the next harvest season.
