The Asian Development Bank is providing additional loan money to Kiribati for the ongoing South Tarawa Sanitation Improvement Sector Project.

The project aims to provide improved sanitation infrastructure and services for South Tarawa's urban population.

The ADB's Robert Jauncey said the money would support the rehabilitation of sewerage systems and an upgrade of ocean sewage outfalls.

He said once completed it was expected to result in significant health improvements and higher productivity.

The extra money means that more than $US26 million dollars would be spent on the project.

This includes a $US7 million loan from the ADB and $US13 million dollars in aid from Australia.
