Heavy rain in the highlands of Papua New Guinea has destroyed bridges and roads isolating a large number of rural communities.

The Post Courier reports that landslips have affected the Highlands Highway between Eastern Highlands and Jiwaka, while in Chimbu, the Kundiawa to Gembogl road has been blocked in three places since Sunday.

It said in Jiwaka more damage has been done to the Dei to Jiwaka highway, the main road to the coffee growing districts of Western Highlands.

The Tuman River has burst its banks and flooded coffee plantations, food gardens, and homes.

The Chimbu Administrator, Joe Kunda Naur, has called on the people living close to damaged parts of the road not to illegally toll commuters and drivers.
