Fiji will seek closer ties with British law enforcement agencies to bolster the capabilities of its police.

The Prime Minister, Frank Bainimarama, said Fiji regards Britain as a strong role model for improving standards of policing because of its history of enlightened policing and strong historical links.

The Government is seeking closer ties to train its police in modern investigative and questioning techniques.

The prime minister said Britain is already partnering with Fiji on a six month pilot program in Suva to improve the capacity of the police in two keys areas.

These are providing all suspects with legal aid assistance within the first hour of arrest and the digital recording of police caution interviews to improve transparency around arrest and detention procedures.

Mr Bainimarama said better training is clearly the key to a better overall performance on the part of Fiji's police.
