The leader of Fiji's National Federation Party says allegations that his party is racist defy logic.

Fiji's Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama told the FBC News he believed the opposition NFP was a racist party following reports that it might form a coalition with other opposition parties.

Mr Bainimarama described the NFP as racist because they are in the cane fields for the vote of the Indo-Fijians.

He said there is no possibility of such a coalition given that the party policies will not align.

However the NFP's Biman Prasad said Mr Banimarama does not understand that at least a fifth of sugarcane farmers are of iTaukei descent.

"For the Prime Minister to use that logic and label the National Federation Party as a racist party is actually quite sad and it is disappointment that this sort of statement is coming from the Prime Minister, who himself has a lot of questions to answer," he said.
