7:42 am on 29 October 2016

Seven cases of a viral illness known as hand, foot, and mouth disease have been confirmed on Saipan in the Northern Marianas.

The Commonwealth Health Center said five of the eight diagnosed cases of HFM disease affected children under 5 years of age.

The hospital said no cases have been reported since October 20th.

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is an illness that causes sores in or on the mouth and on the hands, feet, and sometimes the buttocks and legs.

It is not the same as other diseases, such as foot-and-mouth disease, which mostly occurs in animals.
