The chief of operations for Fiji's police says an investigation has been launched into the latest allegation of police abuse.

Ricardo Fisher told RNZ International on Monday that he was punched and kicked while in custody last week.

Mr Fisher says he spent two days in hospital with injuries including broken ribs.

Rusiate Tudravu has confirmed that Mr Fisher was kept in police custody last week and was charged with disorderly behaviour and resisting arrest.

Mr Tudravu also confirmed that Mr Fisher was later taken to hospital, where he was kept under police guard.

He says an investigation has been launched and officers are now trying to verify the complaint that Mr Fisher has lodged.

He could give no timeframe for the investigation, but he says he does not condone any form of police violence.

Mr Tudravu says investigations into several other recent cases of police abuse are ongoing.
