A new operating theatre and 20-bed ward has been opened at the hospital in Papua New Guinea's second city, Lae.

The new developments, which cost $US1.2 million, is the first phase of an Australia-funded redevelopment of Angau Hospital.

EMTV reports that the new operating theatre is fully equipped, and both buildings are fully air conditioned with energy efficient lighting.

The hospital's chief executive, Christopher Kenyhercz, said technical experts are putting together a plan for the hospital's full redevelopment.
