Opposition MPs can speak at schools - Fiji Govt

8:34 am on 19 November 2016

Fiji's Government has denied that there is any directive preventing opposition MPs from speaking at school events.

Earlier this week, the opposition Sodelpa party's leader, Sitiveni Rabuka, said his invitation to speak at a school prize giving was withdrawn.

He said the school told him it was done on instruction from the Education Ministry.

But in a statement released late on Friday, the government's department of information said there was no policy within the ministry preventing schools inviting whomever they wish from attending school events.

It said no directive was issued by the Minister or Permanent Secretary regarding Mr Rabuka.

It said it had found that Mr Rabuka's invite was withdrawn because a civil servant acted unilaterally without official approval.
