Samoa MP calls for tougher laws on child street-vendors

A Samoan MP has called for tougher laws to control the growing number of child-street-vendors in Apia.

The MP for Urban West, Faumuina Wayne Fong's comments were in response to a question from the Samoa Observer about recent footage from security cameras posted online showing three children attacking a homeless person while he was sleeping on the street.

Faumuina says there are no laws to protect these children and keep them off the streets late at night.

He said some parents even accompanied their children watching from a distance while they were out selling things.

The MP said there were also some businesses exploiting these children by getting them to resell their goods on the streets.

Faumuina said this was a serious situation that Government needs to address and one that the community needs to work together to resolve.
