A hardline congressman says United States president-elect Donald Trump will do everything in his power to halt a refugee deal with Australia.

Two months ago, President Barack Obama and the Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull agreed to a one-off deal where refugees held by Australia on Nauru and in Papua New Guinea would be resettled in the US.

But no resettlements have yet been made, and Mr Trump, who campaigned hard against immigration and resettlement, will be sworn in as president in 11 days.

A Texas Republican, Brian Babin, told Fairfax media in Australia that Mr Trump will overturn the deal and block any resettlements facilitated by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Fairfax reports that US immigration officials are due back on Nauru over the weekend, with Homeland Security officials due to visit next month.
