Severe fuel shortage hits PNG city

A severe fuel shortage has hit Papua New Guinea's third largest city, with supplies cut off by a landslip on the Highlands Highway.

EMTV reports that fuel prices have skyrocketed in Mt Hagen, with long queues forming at service stations in the area as locals try and stock up on dwindling fuel supplies.

The highway has been affected by flooding, landslides and road blocks by villagers in recent weeks, frustrating residents and users.

The President of the Road Transport Association, Jacob Luke - who operates a local transport company - says the government needs to better maintain the highway.
