In 2015, the Government committed to regularising 50 squatter settlements with leases and amenities like water, sewerage and power.

At that time it was estimated there were 230 squatter settlements in the country.

FBC reported that Mr Koya said the new lease holders could borrow against the leases and build houses or businesses with the loans.

It said the government also planned to provide leases to over eighty families in the Western Division and in Nausori.
