Third ever woman elected to Nauru's parliament

A by-election on Nauru has seen the third ever woman elected to the country's parliament.

A seat in the Ubenide constituency was left vacant after the death of the health and transport minister Valdon Dowiyogo in December.

A by-election was held in the electorate on Thursday, and Gabrissa Hartman was elected after counting in the preferential voting system.

Ms Hartman was declared the victor by the electoral commissioner after counting finished at about 2 o'clock this morning.
