Speaking to the Fiji Sun, Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho said the police needed information from the public.

The mutilated bodies of Nataliya Gerasimova and Yuri Shipulin were found a week apart on Natadola beach several days after their abandoned car was found.

Two pairs of dismembered feet and a decapitated head were found on Natadola Beach in the weeks following the disappearance of Nataliya Gerasimova and Yuri Shipulin.

Tests later found they belonged to the Russian couple who had lived in Fiji for five years.

The pair had last been seen at the tourist hot spot Denarau Island.

In July, Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho said he would make no further public comment until the investigation was completed but it now appears the deaths are still a mystery.

The police chief said more information was needed from the public to progress the inquiry.

In December a senior Russian Embassy official in Canberra Edward Shakirov told RNZ International the Fiji police had informed him the matter was classified and sensitive.

He said he was in contact with the couple's family but he has not responded to any further requests for comment.
