Sir Michael, who has been unwell, died at the weekend.

John Momis said Sir Michael, with whom he had worked for many years, served the country and the people of Bougainville with commitment and great distinction.

He said Sir Michael began his working life as a teacher before becoming a Bougainville MP, a peacemaker and finally holding the highest office in the land.

Mr Momis said Sir Michael, who was the Member for North Bougainville during the civil war, made an immense contribution to the peace process.
