Fiji's Sodelpa party leader has called on the Prime Minister to admit the failure of the government's Help for Homes initiative that was supposed to assist those hardest hit by last year's Cyclone Winston.

Sitiveni Rabuka said Frank Bainimarama should tell villagers in Bua and Ra, who are still waiting for help, that his government cannot deliver on its promises.

Mr Rabuka said nearly $US10 million was budgeted and approved for the scheme but the question remains as to whether the funds have been released and how long it takes to ship materials to affected areas.

"Many people, more than one year after the cyclone, are still living in tents. Some are still awaiting the delivery of their materials for rebuilding and schools have not been completely rehabilitated."

Mr Rabuka said the government should reactivate the Hurricane Relief department of the Ministry of Regional Development, as the previous system worked well.
