Papua New Guinea's government has taken up a US$68 million World Bank loan to improve water supply outside the main cities.

EM TV reported that the Treasurer, Patrick Pruaitch, signed the World Bank loan agreement for the project under the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Policy.
Mr Pruaitch said the agreement was significant for PNG to improve the living standards for many in rural areas who still do not have access to clean water and proper sanitation.
Significant loan assistance will further progress the country's development goal in the social sector by prodiving clean and renewable water supply to many thousands of people living in nine provincial towns and ten rural districts throughout Papua New Guinea. Safe water supply is a requisite for improved sanitation and hygiene in all rural and urban areas."
The project, which included government funding of over US$6 million, will be implemented by the Department of National Planning and Water PNG.
