From tomorrow, the illegal dumping of waste will be punishable, with fines set depending on the severity of the breach.

The move was announced by the Prime Minister Akilisi Pohiva this week.

Matangi Tonga reported that people had been dumping dirty nappies, plastic wrappers, and empty cans on streets, beaches, bush land and in swampy areas.

It said larger goods such as refrigerators, computers and vehicles had also been left lying around in public areas.

The Deputy Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni said litter fines were not issued to make money but to encourage people to keep Tonga clean.
