Fiji's opposition has accused the government of stifling debate in parliament.

The opposition leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa, said through the Parliament Business Committee, the government was imposing severe restrictions on the type of questions, motions and petitions that can be tabled.
Ro Teimumu said the government only allowed items that did not criticise it or were unlikely to gather the support of the public against it.
She said this week issues dealing with the sugar industry, iTaukei and indigenous rights and developments within opposition constituencies had been refused.
Ro Teimumu said it amounted to a serious interference with the democratic process which she planned to raise with counterparts in other parliaments, United Nations agencies and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
