The official appointment follows the court settlement of attempts, going back to last year, to delay Mr Nalpini's appointment.

President Lonsdale urged the new commissioner to make one of his priorities uniting all force members and to ensure there is discipline.

The president said he is aware of division and overcoming this is vital to ensure public confidence in the police.

It is nearly four years since Vanuatu police officers have had a commissioner, with the role filled by five acting commissioners in the interim.
