American Samoa farmers worry taro virus has spread

7:25 pm on 28 June 2017

Farmers in American Samoa are worried a virus that's affecting taro in Samoa may also be affecting crops in the territory.

While a virus has not been confirmed in American Samoa, the Department of Agriculture said it has had reports of a taro virus from local plantations, which it was investigating.

The new taro virus was discovered in Samoa earlier this year, prompting American Samoa to ban all taro shipments from its neighbour.

According to reports, the virus makes it look like the taro shoot is mature, but when uprooted, the taro rubber itself has rotted away.
