The Methodist Church in Fiji has handed a petition to the government complaining about pollution from an asphalt plant built by the China Railway Company.

The company has a multi-million dollar contract to upgrade a number of key roads around the main island, Viti Levu.
The Methodist Church general secretary, Reverend Epineri Vakadewavosa, said communities along or near the Kings Road, at Koronivia, Davuilevu and Dilkusha had expressed concern for some time.
He said the Church raised the matter with the company but it failed to allay the people's concerns about air pollution.
Reverend Vakadewavosa said this is why they presented the petition, stating the Church's opposition to the plant to the permanent secretary for the environment.
The petition has 770 signatures of men and women over the age of 18, representing about 4000 people in the affected areas.
