A man has been crushed to death by a train in Fiji after he allegedly fell asleep on the tracks.

The Fiji Times reports the victim, Saula Matei, was sleeping on a rail bridge in Labasa last Friday when he was crushed by a locomotive operated by the Fiji Sugar Corporation.

The corporation's chief executive Graham Clark said the locomotive was travelling from the Labasa mill to Vunimoli towing empty rail cars.

He said the locomotive's horn was sounded as it approached the bridge and its brake applied, but it could not be brought to a stop in time.

Mr Clark said the pointsman and the train driver had been interviewed by police who were investigating the accident.

He said the corporation had passed its condolences to Mr Matei's family and had launched an internal inquiry.
