The Northern Marianas utilities company is making headway in its efforts to lessen water loss, with water loss down to 59 percent, the lowest it's been in years.

The Commonwealth Utilities Corporation says it has progressively improved what it calls "non-revenue loss-water" -- that is, water that it loses in the network somewhere between the source and customers' taps.

The corporation says it has improved leak detection, identified unregistered users and replaced dysfunctional meters.

Last February, the US Environmental Protection Agency said the CUC lost up to 75 percent of the drinking water it produced, incurring substantial costs.
