The Northern Marianas is launching a traditional canoe programme, aiming to build a 15 metre Chamorro canoe that can sail to New Zealand for competitions in 2020.

The CNMI's Canoe and Navigation program aims to rekindle the long-lost art of traditional sailing.
The programme will officially start next week and will showcase authentic Chamorro and Carolinian canoes that are made exactly how they used to be made, using resources provided by the island.
