The last census in 2007 recorded the permanent population of Fiji as 837,000 with a population density of 45 inhabitants per square kilometre, and life expectancy of 72 years.

The Fiji Bureau of Statistics said the census field operation will start today and enumerators will be visiting homes around the country until 8 October.

The Fiji Village website reported that questions would cover population size, education, economic activity, fertility, communications and internet use.

Authorities advised people to give correct details as the information is vital in planning for the country's future.

They were warning people should only allow census officers into their homes when they have produced a valid photo ID card.
